Description

NGC 4945 is an edge-on barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation of Centaurus, and lies some 11 million light years away. It's barred spiral structure and size makes it comparable to our home galaxy, the Milky Way, and as such is often described as a twin. It has intense starburst activity, which means that there is rapid star formation activity observed. At its heart lies an active supermassive black hole 1.6 million times the mass of the Sun, just slightly smaller than the one at the centre of our galaxy.
